This collection consists of copies of newspaper articles, clippings, minutes, constitutions, bylaws, reports, and publications. It documents the early history of the Bakery, Confectionery, and Tobacco Workers International Union dating from 1881-1899 and complements the Bakery, Confectionary, and Tobacco Workers International Union organizational records that are also part of the labor collections at University of Maryland. Some items in this collection were used by University of Maryland history professor Stuart Kaufman, collected with the assistance of Paul Brenner, to write his book A Vision of Unity: The History of the Bakery and Confectionery Workers International Union (1986).

Founded January 13, 1886 as National Union of Journeymen Bakers of North America. In 1902, the union was also given jurisdiction over confectionary workers. Merged with tobacco workers in 1980 to form Bakery, Confectionary and Tobacco Workers International Union of America.
